Profile: Rieko Oshima-Barclay
Our friend Rieko Oshima-Barclay (MNIMH, Dip Phyt/MIFPA, MAR) is an experienced, passionate and extremely knowledgeable herbal therapist, who we’ve worked closely with for many years – find out more about Rieko, her varied skills and her work below.
Rieko’s most recent visit to Organic Herb Trading was in late May 2015, with Rieko and a number of her students visiting our herb field and herbal liquids manufacturing facility, in conjunction with our own herbalist and herbal liquids expert Jane Wallwork-Gush.
Rieko says: “I have always been interested in Natural Plant Remedies and Complementary Therapies alike; this is the reason why I became a Therapist. My experience of Herbal Medicine, Aromatherapy, Massage & Reflexology extends over 10 years, and includes giving treatment, teaching and running workshops in the UK and abroad, and advising practitioners and companies on herbal formulations.
I am a qualified Medical Herbalist and am a member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists (NIMH) - the oldest body of practicing Medical Herbalists in the world. In April 2000 I was awarded a Diploma of Phytotherapy from the College of Phytotherapy (Herbal Medicine), Sussex. As a research student at the Medical and Aromatic Plant Group (the plant science department at The Scottish Agricultural College, Ayr, Scotland), I studied mainly Essential Oil and Medicinal Plant properties.
I am also an experienced Massage practitioner and professional Reflexologist, offering various combination treatments (herbs, Massage, Reflexology) according to the client's needs. I studied Massage and Aromatherapy in both Japan and the UK where I obtained certificates in Advanced Deep Tissue Massage, Holistic Medical Massage, Aromatherapy, Manual lymphatic drainage massage, Reflexology and Massage & Reflexology in Pregnancy.
I am a member of the International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists (IFPA) and also the Association of Reflexologists (AoR), the leading professional organisation for practising Reflexologists.
I have supported patients suffering from various health conditions with a good rate of success, in particular: women’s health issues (e.g. fertility issues, hormonal imbalance), skin problems, anxiety and stress, digestive disorders and headaches.
Alongside many published articles about herbal medicine, my first book, "British Herbal Medicine and Healing", is now in its third successful edition for Japanese readers, with my second herbal medicine book published in 2013.
I’m also passionate about supporting charitable causes, most recently in response to the earthquake and tsunami which devastated parts of Japan in March 2011. I worked with the British Red Cross, The Japan Society and Herbs for Japan to fundraise and support victims and animals”.
Jane said: “I’ve worked with Rieko for a number of years now, and her regular visits to Organic Herb Trading with her students focus on both our herb field and our liquids products, with our most recent session focusing on glycerites and their applications. I have great respect for Rieko’s knowledge and her work, and hope to continue working closely together for many years to come”.
